1959: David Ecklein with EMAG-3. 3200 vacuum tubes, wired (miles of it) to play checkers against a human opponent. The project stood 15 feet tall, but fit science fair floor space requirements. Height regulations were introduced the next year. Begun in 1957, EMAG-3 took two years to complete.
